B.A. Human Rights

B.A. Human Rights is a three-year undergraduate program that explores the fundamental rights and freedoms entitled to every individual. The course covers subjects like international human rights law, constitutional rights, social justice, and humanitarian issues. Students gain insights into civil, political, economic, and cultural rights through case studies, fieldwork, and legal frameworks. Graduates can pursue careers in law, social work, NGOs, public policy, journalism, or continue with higher studies in human rights, political science, or law.

Admission Details

  • Only women candidates are eligible to apply.
  • The candidate should have appeared for the Plus Two examinations (HSC) conducted by the Tamil Nadu State Board or its equivalent and secured a minimum of pass in all the subjects.
  • The candidate should not exceed the age limit of 24 years as on 1st of July. (Relaxation of 2 years permitted for physically challenged candidates.)
  • For PG courses, the candidate should have completed a UG degree from Periyar University or any other equivalent university.

After completing a B.A. Human Rights degree from Periyar University or any other recognized institution, you can pursue diverse career paths in law, social justice, governance, non-profit sectors, and academia. Here are some potential career opportunities and roles:

  1. Legal and Advocacy:
    • Human Rights Advocate: Work with legal teams or NGOs to defend and promote individual and community rights.
    • Legal Assistant/Paralegal: Assist in preparing legal documents and case research for human rights law firms or organizations.
    • Public Interest Litigator: Engage in legal actions supporting social justice and human rights causes.
  2. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs):
    • NGO Coordinator: Plan and manage human rights programs and campaigns for non-profit organizations.
    • Field Worker: Work at the grassroots level to monitor, report, and improve human rights conditions.
  3. Government and Civil Services:
    • Human Rights Officer: Join government agencies or commissions to address rights violations and policy compliance.
    • Civil Services: Pursue UPSC, TNPSC, or other state-level services to influence policy and governance on human rights matters.

    • Human Rights Journalist: Report on social justice issues, civil liberties, and human rights violations.

Admission Procedure

Candidates for admission to the first year of the three-year degree course should have passed the Higher Secondary Certificate Examination or any other equivalent thereto accepted by the Syndicate, Periyar University – Salem.

  • All candidates should present Original Transfer Certificate from the Institution they last attended
  • Candidates from other states should produce Eligibility Certificate from Periyar University – Salem
  • Candidates from other countries shall produce Migration Certificate and also Recognition Certificate from Periyar University – Salem.
  • A student admitted after the beginning of a term should pay the whole fee for the term
  • Students who are found to have obtained admission by producing false documents will be summarily dismissed with forfeiture of all fees paid
  • If a student, who has duly paid her fees, leaves the college, she will be furnished with a Transfer Certificate on application
  • Separate quotas are available for Physically Challenged and Sports personals (Priority for National Level and State Level).

Policies

Every student is required to observe disciplined and decorous behaviour both inside and outside the Campus and not to indulge in any activity which will tend to bring down the prestige of the College.

  • If a student indulges in malpractice in any of the End Semester theory / practical examination, she shall be liable for punitive action as prescribed from time to time.
  • Students enrolled at our College must recognize their responsibilities towards the faculty, office staff and fellow students. Failure to maintain appropriate standards of conduct will attract disciplinary action.
  • The College believes that duty, decorum and discipline are the hallmarks of a good student. Students with such qualities alone can prove to be productive manpower with an appreciable value system. Therefore, erring students would be subjected to certain disciplinary code.
  • The following acts, would be deemed to be acts of indiscipline – any overt or covert act leading to ragging and eve teasing, disruption of class room activities or disturbing the studies of other students.
  • Harming the health or safety of staff or students
  • Misconduct during examination, production of false information or documents for admission purpose
