M.A History

M.A. History is a two-year postgraduate program that provides comprehensive knowledge of historical events, civilizations, cultures, and political movements from ancient to modern times. The course includes Indian and world history, historiography, archaeology, art and architecture, and research methodology. Students develop critical thinking, analytical, and interpretive skills. Graduates can pursue careers as history teachers, researchers, archivists, museum curators, civil service aspirants, or continue with higher studies like M.Phil. or Ph.D. in History.

Admission Details

  • Only women candidates are eligible to apply.
  • The candidate should have completed a UG degree in Tamil or a related field from Periyar University or any other recognized university.
  • The program is offered through distance learning and is designed to support learners from rural backgrounds and adult learners.
  • There is no upper age limit for admission to the M.Sc. Computer Science program.

Scope for MA History

After completing a Master of Arts (M.A.) in History from Periyar University or any recognized institution, you will gain an in-depth understanding of Indian and world history, historiography, archaeology, political movements, and cultural evolution. This qualification equips you with analytical, research, and interpretive skills vital for academic, administrative, and heritage-related careers.

  1. Academic and Educational Careers:
    • Assistant Professor / Lecturer: Teach history and related subjects at colleges and universities.
    • School Teacher: Educate students in history at higher secondary and matriculation schools.
    • Curriculum Developer: Design history textbooks, academic materials, or educational content for e-learning platforms.
  2. Research and Archival Work:
    • Research Scholar / Ph.D. Candidate: Conduct academic research in historical studies, heritage, or culture.
    • Archivist / Curator: Work with museums, archives, and libraries to manage historical records and artifacts.
    • Archaeological Officer: Assist in excavations and preservation of historical sites (through UPSC/State exams).
  3. Government and Public Sector:
    • Civil Services Aspirant: Prepare for competitive exams like TNPSC, UPSC, SSC for roles in administration and policy.

Admission Procedure

Candidates seeking admission to the first year of the Postgraduate degree course should have completed a relevant Undergraduate degree from Periyar University – Salem or any other recognized university accepted by the Syndicate, Periyar University – Salem.

  • All candidates should present the Original Transfer Certificate from the institution last attended.
  • Candidates from other states should produce an Eligibility Certificate from Periyar University – Salem.
  • Candidates from other countries shall produce a Migration Certificate and also a Recognition Certificate from Periyar University – Salem.
  • A student admitted after the beginning of a term should pay the whole fee for the term.
  • Students who are found to have obtained admission by producing false documents will be summarily dismissed with forfeiture of all fees paid.
  • If a student, who has duly paid her fees, leaves the college, she will be furnished with a Transfer Certificate upon request.
  • Separate quotas are available for Physically Challenged and Sports personnel (with priority given to National and State Level achievers).

Policies

Every student is required to observe disciplined and decorous behaviour both inside and outside the Campus and not to indulge in any activity which will tend to bring down the prestige of the College.

  • If a student indulges in malpractice in any of the End Semester theory / practical examination, she shall be liable for punitive action as prescribed from time to time.
  • Students enrolled at our College must recognize their responsibilities towards the faculty, office staff and fellow students. Failure to maintain appropriate standards of conduct will attract disciplinary action.
  • The College believes that duty, decorum and discipline are the hallmarks of a good student. Students with such qualities alone can prove to be productive manpower with an appreciable value system. Therefore, erring students would be subjected to certain disciplinary code.
  • The following acts would be deemed to be acts of indiscipline – any overt or covert act leading to ragging and eve teasing, disruption of classroom activities, or disturbing the studies of other students.
  • Harming the health or safety of staff or students
  • Misconduct during examination, or production of false information or documents for admission purpose
